The Boston Red Sox have been making a lot of moves in recent days. With the MLB Draft going on, there were bound to be some promotions, and we've seen quite a few over the weekend.
First, the Red Sox promoted pitcher Luis Perales to High-A. Meanwhile, pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez and corner infielder Blaze Jordan jumped to Double-A.
Now, the team is promoting two more Single-A players to High-A. Outfielder Allan Castro and relief pitcher Felix Cepeda are on the move to Greenville with Perales.
Allan Castro is ranked number 24 in the system, according to SoxProspects. Castro is a 20-year-old switch-hitting outfielder with plus raw power. He slashed .247/.376/.378 with 20 doubles, two triples, and three home runs. Castro drove in 29 runs, scored 39 more, and stole 15 bases.
Salem's ballpark is notorious for not being friendly to hitters. Despite that, Castro was able to put up solid numbers. It should be a ton of fun to see him in Greenville, which is a much more hitter-friendly park. Some people are already pretty high on the outfielder. Getting him out of Salem could skyrocket his hype.
Felix Cepeda is a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher. He converted to a reliever in 2022. Cepeda has a 3.03 ERA, .216 BAA, and 1.53 WHIP in 19 appearances. Across 32 2/3 innings, Cepeda has struck out 39 batters and walked 23. Most importantly, he has yet to surrender a home run.
Cepeda was putting up video game numbers earlier in the year but hit a wall in his last five outings. However, a little fatigue isn't surprising. His 19 appearances this year are only nine off his career-high. And his 32 2/3 innings are 16 2/3 off that career-high.
This short break should help him to recharge. Cepeda features a live fastball with a lot of potential that plays well out of the bullpen. This promotion should be a good challenge for him as he attempts to go back to his dominant ways.
The Boston Red Sox have been extremely aggressive recently. So don't be surprised if there are more moves to come. We'll try to keep everyone updated as they happen.
