Bobby Dalbec could be on the move
Over the last few months, Bobby Dalbec has been a popular name in the rumor mill. The former top prospect is coming off a 2022 campaign full of ups and downs. With the arrival of Triston Casas in the majors last season, Dalbec saw his time at first decrease. After the addition of Justin Turner in free agency, a change of scenery could be on the horizon as on paper there is not much playing time for Dalbec.
With the World Baseball Classic set to begin in a few weeks, Dalbec will get to showcase his abilities. The Grapefruit League will serve as an audition, with many teams keeping a close eye on the University of Arizona product. He has already taken reps at third base during workouts at Fort Myers to increase his versatility.
Through his first 273 games in the majors, Dalbec has posted a .232 batting average with 45 home runs and 133 runs batted in. During the 2022 campaign, the 27-year-old posted career lows in home runs, batting average, and runs batted in. His drop in production led to a demotion to Triple-A late in the season.
As Opening Day approaches, the Red Sox have two options with Dalbec. They could trade him as teams are still intrigued by his power. In December, there were reports that the Rays were interested in his services. Despite his struggles, Dalbec still recorded 23 extra-base hits last season.
The second option is to carry the 27-year-old as a bench piece or a depth option at Triple-A. He has minor league options and is not long removed from an excellent showing down the stretch during the 2021 season. For a few weeks, Dalbec was one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball and posted a .955 OPS.
During spring training, Dalbec is expected to see time at first base, third base, and shortstop. With Rafael Devers and Kiké Hernandez playing in the WBC, there will be plenty of at-bats to go around. For Dalbec, it will be a prime opportunity to turn the page on the 2022 season.
If Dalbec performs well, the Red Sox should be able to get something of value in a trade, or they will have a difficult roster decision to make. The Seattle native will be more motivated than ever during arguably the most important spring training of his career.
