Blaze Jordan is showing why scouts hold him in high regard
In the third round of the 2020 MLB draft, the Red Sox selected one of the top high school talents, Blaze Jordan. Since joining the Red Sox organization, Jordan’s value has steadily risen as he is ranked 10th on the Red’s Sox top 30 prospect list. Through the first few weeks of the 2023 campaign, he has continued to show why scouts hold him in high regard.
After a slow start, Jordan has been hard to keep off of the bases. Entering play on Saturday, the Mississippi native has a ten-game hitting streak. As a result, his average has increased by over 100 points to .292. Jordan has four multi-hit games in that span and has shown off his power.
Through 65 at-bats, Jordan has 19 hits, seven of which have gone for extra bases. When the Red Sox drafted the 20-year-old, he was known for hitting towering home runs, as he did on Tuesday and Friday night against Hudson Valley. He has regained his power stroke, as all his home runs this season have come in the last week.
While Jordan isn’t projected to make his MLB debut until 2025, he is seen as an important part of the Red Sox’s future. He possesses above-average power and has shown good plate discipline. In his first 165 games in the minors, the talented infielder has posted a .295 batting average and .838 OPS.
As Jordan moves closer to the majors, he must work on his approach against off-speed pitches. In the minors, the former 89th overall pick has struggled against changeups and with velocity in the mid-90s. He has the ceiling of a bat-first regular, according to Sox prospects. As Jordan has started to find his rhythm at the plate, his strikeouts have decreased, which is an encouraging sign for the Red Sox.
The DeSoto Central High School product will be a prospect to watch. He is currently at Single-A and can play multiple positions. So far this season, Jordan has appeared in 13 games at first base and two at third. If he continues his recent play, a promotion could be on the horizon.
