Bill O’Brien emerging as a serious option to become offensive coordinator for the Patriots next season?
The New England Patriots offense has been lackluster all season. The Matt Patricia-led offense has looked more like a high school program than an NFL machine.
All that could change in the coming weeks as Alabama’s offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien is a strong option to return to New England. In the process he would assume his old role as offensive coordinator under Bill Belichick for next season.
If this were to happen, it would be music to Mac Jones’s ears. The second year quarterback has regressed under the direction of Patricia.
Jones hasn’t played consistent all season with his new offensive play caller but he continues to try and be optimistic each week.
"I think it goes back to just trusting the process of everything and doing whatever you can do to become a great football player," Jones said. "Eventually that will show up on film. So a lot of things as an offense, it's 11 guys and you have to try to push everybody as a quarterback to do the right thing and make sure we're all on the same page. We've done that at times. But just getting that consistency. Obviously with myself, too."
The last time O’Brien was with the Patriots was during the 2007-2011 seasons. The Patriots led the league with 30.7 points per game and were second with 393.1 total yards per game. Since his departure in 2011, the Patriots have averaged three fewer points per game.
O’Brien had success with Tom Brady, it will be interesting if he can be a positive impact on Jones. If O’Brien gets the job, he would be the Alabama products third offensive coordinator in each of his three seasons in the NFL.
