Bill Burr to become the first comedian to headline Fenway Park on Sunday night
I’ve always wondered what stories the Green Monster could tell if it had the ability to talk? The countless number of baseball moments and history played before the legendary Green Monster could rival any venue in sports. Besides the mystique of Red Sox history at Fenway Park, another first will take place at America’s Most Beloved Ballpark on Sunday night.
Comedian Bill Burr is set to become the first comedian to perform in front of a capacity crowd at Fenway Park.
This is a show that I’ve circled on my calendar the second it was announced earlier this year. I’ve seen the Foo Fighters twice at Fenway, Billy Joel last summer - which he put on an amazing performance and countless number of Red Sox games. Seeing one of the top comedians and his act at Fenway Park will be another historic moment at the for me at ballpark.
It’ll be refreshing going to Fenway and not having to hear “Sweet Caroline” being pumped through the speakers during the middle of the eighth inning, but instead Burr pushing the envelope with his jokes.
The Canton, Mass. native, who purposely tells fans he’s from Boston versus Canton because people think he’s talking about Ohio. He will have a chance on Sunday night, where he could preform in front of 38,000 fans. The show at Fenway Park could be the biggest audience he’s ever performed his act in front of in his career.
Burr’s started telling jokes in fourth grade, that has led him to Netflix specials and now Fenway Park. I’d have to imagine that’s as surreal as it can get for a local comedian who is avid Red Sox fan. Now getting to perform at home in one of the biggest venue’s in the area. Performing at Fenway Park like Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz and countless others.
“Never imagined it would lead to Fenway,” Burr said in a statement released by Live Nation. “Kind of speechless, which is rare for a big mouth like me.”
Hopefully Burr will not disappoint and go after the Yankees to get a pop from the Fenway crowd. Burr had a few jokes about Derek Jeter earlier this year when in the NESN booth with Dave O’Brien and Kevin Youkilis.
“That guy he was incredible,” Burr said. “I don’t hate individuals. They’re great. I can’t work up that level of hate. … There’s a whole bunch of Yankees that I love. I just hate them. That’s just what you’re supposed to do.”
