Beyond the Monster: Chris Sale throws an immaculate inning against the Twins back in 2021
Beyond the Monster is an ongoing series where we take you back in time and look at moments in Red Sox history.
Chris Sale had a few bright spots for the Red Sox during the 2021 season. The tall lefty rejoined the team after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Sale would provide a cool moment for fans by throwing an immaculate inning.
The Florida native took the mound against the Twins looking for his third win of the season.
The left-handed hurler was dominant against the Twins over the course of the first two innings. Sale was dominant striking out four while surrendering zero hits heading into the third inning.
The seven time All-Star would mow down the Twins in order and he would do so by throwing an immaculate inning.
He would get Twins’ Nick Gordon to strike out swinging to begin the inning. Twins shortstop Andrelton Simmons would strike out swinging. Sale would then get now Red Sox utilityman Rob Refsnyder to go down swinging for his third strike out of the inning.
The 33-year-old would throw nine pitches, all for strikes for the immaculate inning. This was not the first time that Sale has completed such feat. The last Red Sox pitcher to throw an immaculate inning was Sale who did that against the Orioles and Royals.
An immaculate inning occurs when a pitcher strikes out all three batters he faces in one inning, using the minimum possible number of pitches, nine.
This was the first immaculate inning throw at Fenway Park since Pedro Martinez threw one back in 2002 against the Mariners.
