Beyond the Monster is an ongoing series where we take you back in time and look at moments in Red Sox history.
The Red Sox were red hot heading into the 2018 postseason winning 108 regular season games. Boston rode into the postseason with a first-round date with their arch-rivals, the New York Yankees. The 2018 American League Division Series began in Boston from Fenway Park where both the clubs split the series with a win a piece.
A Postseason first
Throughout his career in Boston, Brock Holt was an unlikely hero for the Red Sox. Prior to getting the start in Game 3, Holt hadn’t played in the previous two of the series and over the last week. Boston’s offense was in search of a jolt and manager Alex Cora penciled the fan-favorite in against Luis Severino.
Holt batted seventh in the lineup and it paid off. He went 4-6, with three runs and five RBIs. The left-handed Holt went on to be the first player in postseason history to hit for the cycle. Up to that point, there had been 1,562 postseason games played and no other player had completed that feat.
Dustin Pedroia’s reaction
Following his retirement, he went on Barstool Sports “Section 10 Podcast” to talk about his career and share stories. Pedroia shared his thoughts on the night Holt went on and hit for the cycle.

New York, New York
Following Game 2 of the ALDS at Fenway Park, the Yankees tied the series with a win over Boston. The Yankees celebrated by playing Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” in the visitors clubhouse. Yankees’ outfielder Aaron Judge played the song on a boombox as he was leaving the clubhouse following the game.
Holt’s cycle helped lead the Red Sox to a 2-1 series advantage which ultimately led to a Game 3 victory at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox would repay the favor and celebrate at Yankee Stadium paying homage to ‘ol Blue Eyes’.
Holt’s cycle catapulted the Red Sox in the series and Boston would finish off the Yankees. The Red Sox advanced to the ALCS to battle the Houston Astros. The ALCS featured many huge moments for the Red Sox, including one with Alex Bregman and Nathan Eovaldi.
