Blue Jays draft pick Brennan Orf talks being selected: 'Being drafted is something you dream about'
With the MLB draft completed and the deadline to sign picks is approaching, many guys will begin their lifelong dream of making their way to their MLB debut.
Brennan Orf is no different.
Orf went to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, which lies in a suburb of Saint Louis. It’s baseball program didn’t transition to Division I until 2009. He knows how big this moment is for himself.
“Being drafted is something you dream about growing up and there are a lot of emotions when it happens.” Orf told Beyond the Monster. “I was super excited and glad I got to share that moment with my family and friends at home in St. Louis. When I got the call, it did not seem real in the moment and I don’t think it has fully hit me yet. I’m blessed to be able to experience this and look forward to continuing playing baseball professionally.”
The Toronto Blue Jays selected Orf with their 13th round pick in the draft. For those who may not have watched many SIUE games this season, Orf describes himself as “an OF/1B that uses all fields at the plate and tries to work pitches and get walked. Not very aggressive at the plate with some power.”
His college has only seen a handful of players even get drafted in it’s history. This year they had two being drafted with teammate Avery Owusu-Asiedu being drafted by Philadelphia in the 9th round.
“It was a really cool experience since we were both in the same class.” Orf noted. “Avery and I have been roommates all three years and played summer ball together the first two years. We are like brothers and I am super excited for him and the opportunity with the Phillies. We also had an undrafted signing, Jake Bockenstedt, who went to the White Sox. Also my roommate this year so I am super happy and excited for him to get his chance as well. Looking forward to seeing them in pro ball.”
