Alex Verdugo takes accountability for his play following the loss to the Twins
Sloppy play and poor pitching cost the Red Sox another game. This time a costly error of the glove of right fielder Alex Verdugo set up for the Twins’ Nick Gordon’s grand slam off Ryan Brasier.
In the bottom of the fifth and with one one, Carlos Correa popped up to right field but Verdugo mis-played the ball off his glove and was ruled an error.
The error led to the Gordon grand slam and following the game, Verdugo met with reporters and took accountability for his play.
"It pisses me off when I make mistakes, when I mess up, when I hurt the team. I take it heavy. It’s not something I take lightly … I’m definitely pissed off about it,” said Verdugo.
"Just got to be better. It's a play I make 99 times out of 100. Last minute took my eyes off the ball a little bit. Hey, f—cking happens. We'll be better. We'll make the next play.
“ "We've got to clean up everything. We've got to obviously clean up the defense. Pitchers have attack the zone; we've got to come through clutch with hitting. We can't just get a couple of hits and call it good ... Right now we're not firing on any of the cylinders,” added Verdugo.
The Red Sox right fielder’s tune in his comments were filled with frustration of his play and the team’s play this season. Verdugo addressed the sloppy play without throwing a tantrum and destroying televisions or using the sky as an excuse on not making the catch.
The Red Sox have now dropped two straight to the Twins. They’ll play the series finale on Wednesday and will look to salvage the series with a win.
