At the conclusion of the inning, Cole had words with home plate umpire Brian Knight. The home plate umpire’s strike zone had been questionable all game. It appears that Cole took his frustrations out on Knight for giving up the game tying homer to Verdugo.
Following the game, Verdugo talked about Cole and getting ejected from the game.
“It wasn’t even close. He can complain all he wants. The goal of this game is to throw it over the white plate. He wants to steal every pitch and he wants his catcher to steal it and he’s just mad that the outcome happened on our side,” said Verdugo.
Cole has now given up 31 home runs this season tying a career high.
“It’s just frustration,” Verdugo said about Cole arguing after the inning. “You know what I mean? That’s just pure anger. Give up a game-tying homer, he’s definitely pissed off. But at the end of the day, you’ve got to throw a strike and those pitches were not strikes.”
Verdugo’s home run was his 10th of the season.
