Alex Verdugo gets on base five times in Red Sox 8-3 win over the Pirates
Verdugo on his recent success at the plate: 'I'm locked in'
Alex Verdugo has been on fire at the plate the last five games. That streak continued into Wednesday night when Verdugo went 3-for-3 with one double, one RBI, three runs scored in the win over the Pirates. In total, Verdugo reached base five times for the second time in his big league career.
“I’m locked in,” Verdugo told NESN’s Jahmai Webster, as seen on the network’s postgame coverage. “I’m staying within myself, not trying to do too much. Being on time with the pitcher and just trying to use the big part of the field.”
Verdugo is now hitting .360 (18-for-50) in the month of August. The Sox outfielder started the season off slowly but has been focused at the dish the last few weeks.
With the win, the Red Sox are now back to .500 with a record of 59-59. Boston will enter Thursday night’s series finale with the Pirates four games out of the final Wild Card spot.
If the Red Sox defeat the Pirates on Thursday, they will get the series sweep. This will be the first opponent sweep since late June when they swept the Cleveland Guardians.
