Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo had a strong night at the plate in the 9-5 win over the Royals on Saturday night.
Verdugo went 3-for-5 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
The 27-year-old opened the game with a leadoff triple and later scored a run on Rafael Devers double to right in the frame.
Verdugo collected his 34th double to go along with the triple and added a single later in the contest.
“I kind of jumped the gun on that first pitch,” Verdugo said following the game. “I was just going to try and elevate it, but (Collin Snider) threw a sinker down, I should have took it. Next time, I will.”
NESN’s Tom Caron joked with the right fielder on how he almost won Red Sox fans free furniture. The retailer Jordan’s Furniture had a promo earlier this year, that if a Red Sox player hit for the cycle, they’d give away furniture.
“Now I know! That’s good,” Verdugo said. “I’m looking for a house, too. So, hopefully, we can get some furniture for it, but I didn’t know that. That’s actually funny. Hopefully there’ll be more opportunities.”
Despite not hitting for the cycle, Verdugo was ecstatic to help contribute in the a win for the feeling Red Sox.
“It feels good,” Verdugo said. “I know their record doesn’t really show it too much, but that’s a good team. They have a lot of talent over there and they’re young guys that are hungry and want to make a name in the big league. They’re playing good ball and they’re trying to play spoiler.”
