It’s been a while but Red Sox lefty Chris Sale is expected to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and again on Saturday. The expectation from there is Sale will face batters during a live batting practice session next week.
“Chris is doing well,” manager Alex Cora said Tuesday in a press conference at JetBlue Park.
Sale missed the majority of last season due to a right rib stress fracture. During his second start back in July, he was struck by a line drive on his left pinky against the Yankees. To make matters worse, Sale would end up seeing his season come to an end after breaking his right wrist in a bicycle accident in early August.
Red Sox fans are optimistically hoping Sale will return to form. The tall skinny left-hander has only made 11 regular-season starts since 2020.
Cora was asked if he will utilize a five or six man rotation and he said “we’ll see.” During the offseason general manager Brian O’Halloran said that the Sox would not use a six man rotation.
Sale is hoping to be the club’s Opening Day starter, health will be a major factor on whether he will get that opportunity. If the Florida native stays healthy this spring, he will all but be a lock to start on Opening Day.

“Doing Well” that’s not a very positive thing. But maybe just maybe Cora is telling it how it is for once when it comes to pitching.
