Alex Cora on Christian Arroyo: ‘He’s our second baseman as of now’
Arroyo is a strong candidate to be the Red Sox starting second baseman to begin the new season
Red Sox infielder Christian Arroyo comes into camp as the potential starting second baseman. Manager Alex Cora said in a spring training press conference Tuesday morning, Arroyo is “our second baseman as of now.”
Arroyo will get the opportunity to take over as an everyday player after putting together a respectable 2022 season.
He played a career high of 87 games and hit .286/.322/.414 with 16 doubles and six home runs. The Florida native set career highs in almost every category. Arroyo was one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball during the month of August, mashing at the dish going 35-for-94 (.372) with eight doubles and a .915 OPS in a 24-game stretch from July 30 to Aug. 28.
Health has been a factor in Arroyo being an everyday contributor during his big league career. With the departure of Xander Bogaerts and Trevor Story’s surgery on his elbow, Cora will rely on Arroyo.
The Red Sox will head into the season with Kiké Hernández and Arroyo as their up-the-middle combination. Cora spoke very highly of new infielder Adalberto Mondesi and indicated he could be a candidate to start at second base. Mondesi will be behind others at the start of spring training as he rehabs from knee surgery.
