Alex Cora on Alex Verdugo: ‘There’s a reason he’s hitting behind the big boys’
Verdugo: ‘I’ve been really locked in over the last couple of days, and been using the whole field’
Red Sox left fielder Alex Verdugo has been dialed in at the plate the last few days. Verdugo belted his fifth home run of the season on Saturday night. The three-run shot off Guardians righty Shane Bieber gave Boston a 3-2 lead.
The 447-foot homer helped guide starter Josh Winckowski and the bullpen to a 4-2 win in Cleveland.
“I’ve been really locked in over the last couple of days, and been using the whole field,” said Verdugo following the game. “I was looking for a heater, and was able to get a curveball that was middle in.”
Bieber would hang a curveball to Verdugo who crushed it deep into the right field bleachers.
“He didn’t miss [that pitch],” manager Alex Cora said of Verdugo’s homer. “There’s a reason he’s hitting behind the big boys. He’s a good hitter and understands the strike zone.”
