Alex Binelas continues scorching stretch
The Portland Sea Dogs’ 3rd baseman is one of the hottest hitter on the planet right now. Alex Binelas, acquired in the 2021 Hunter Renfroe trade, has been seeing beach balls at the plate recently. It hasn’t been the smoothest of sailings for the 23-year-old, so it’s been refreshing to see the Sea Dog consistently put the bat to the ball.
It’s been 3 straight games that Binelas has recorded a multi-hit game. This marks the first time he’s accomplished this feat in his time in AA. In this mini stretch, Binelas is 7-14 with 3 home runs and a double. Since his 0-1 performance on Saturday, Binelas has raised his batting average by 24 points.
Hitting just .229 overall with a .277 on-base percentage, the hope would obviously be for Binelas to continue this hot stretch. Striking out a whooping 40.2% of the time this season and walking just 6.5%, he will need to improve considerably on his plate discipline in order to take the next step. Just over 400 plate appearances in AA, the clock is ticking for the 2021 3rd rounder.
Binelas has always struck out a lot, never carrying a strikeout percentage less than 20%. Acquired from the Brewers just months after being drafted, Binelas was coming off a shortened first season in pro-ball in which he slashed .309/.390/.583 with 9 home runs.
Is it possible Binelas appears for the Worcester Red Sox this year? Likely not, but with an abundance of injuries throughout the entire farm system (and especially in Worcester), it can’t be ruled out he gets a cup of coffee at Polar Park. For now, he will look to continue his hot streak at Hadlock Field with the Portland Sea Dogs.
