AJ Politi becoming intriguing non-roster bullpen option for Red Sox
We have seen quite a few moves be made this year to address the Red Sox bullpen. Whether it’s been a waiver claim or a call-up, many new faces have seen time in the bullpen to begin the year.
The pitching woes in Worcester have settled down a bit after solid starts in the past week from Brandon Walter, Shane Drohan, and Jake Faria. There have also been great performances coming from the bullpen, especially from AJ Politi.
The closer role for the WooSox has been held at times by Chase Shugart, Kaleb Ort, Ryan Sherriff, and now AJ Politi. Politi has now collected four saves and is carrying a 3.18 ERA, which is one of the lowest on the team.
The right-hander struggled at times during the month of April, allowing opponents to hit .317 over ten games he pitched in. Things started to turn a corner in the month of May, as opponents hit just .158 off of him in nine games. June is off to a hot start as well, as opposing batters are hitting .143. He has allowed 9 total hits since May 1st. Right-handed hitters are especially struggling, as they are hitting .154 off of Politi this season.
We have seen Sherriff and now Joe Jacques be added to the 40-man roster from Worcester this season. Jacques was promoted after his solid start to the season and his dominance against left-handed hitters. The same can be said for Politi, who dominates right-handed hitters instead and could be a useful option in the Red Sox bullpen.
