The Jets and Bills kicked off their Week 1 matchup on Monday Nighy Football. New quarterback Aaron Rodgers made his team debut and on the first drive of the game, he was sacked by Bills’ Leonard Floyd.
Following the play, Rodgers looked at the sideline and then took a seat on the field, signaling he was injured.
Rodgers was helped off the field by trainers and taken to the blue medical tent on the sidelines. The 39-year-old had x-rays on his injured left ankle and has a boot on, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
The team announced that Rodgers has been ruled out for the remainder of the game.
He was replaced by backup quarterback Zach Wilson.
The new Jets quarterback had officially thrown just one pass, which was an incompletion that he threw away when he was under pressure.
"We still have a hell of a group of guys," Jets coach Robert Saleh told ESPN's Lisa Salters at the end of the first quarter. "Obviously Aaron is a big part of that, but we still have an unbelievable defense, we've got a lot of great guys on offense and we'll get this thing done."
The Jets acquired Rodgers in the offseason from the Packers. He begins his tenure as Jets quarterback only lasting three plays and less than five minutes.
Rodgers will undergo an MRI exam on Tuesday.
“MRI is probably going to confirm what we think is already gonna happen, so prayers tonight,” head coach Robert Saleh said. “But it’s not good.”
The Jets fear that Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear. Wilson will remain the team’s starter for the rest of the season Saleh announced after the game to reporters.
