Bruins reportedly showing interest in Luke Schenn
With the NHL trade deadline quickly approaching, the Bruins have been a popular name in the rumor mill. They have been tied to some of the top players available such as Patrick Kane and Jakob Chychrun. Another name that the Bruins have been connected with that would come at a lower cost is veteran defensemen Luke Scheen.
The former first-round pick has appeared in 53 games for the Canucks this season and recorded 18 points. That is his highest points total since the 2011-2012 campaign. While the veteran defenseman has been more aggressive with the puck, he has been a physical presence.
Through 149 minutes of total ice time, Schenn has landed 250 hits. He has not been afraid to sacrifice his body and blocked 78 shots while recording seven takeaways. On a Canucks team that has struggled this season, the Saskatoon native has been a bright spot. For the Bruins, he would serve as a veteran presence and added depth.
Additionally, come playoff time, Schenn provides valuable experience. He is no stranger to postseason hockey and won back-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021. In 31 playoff games, the former fifth-overall pick has six points and one game-winning goal. His prior postseason success would be valuable to Boston down the stretch.
While no deal has been made yet, Schenn would be a good fit in Boston. Unlike Kaine and Chychrun he would likely only cost a third-round pick and maybe a prospect. If injuries were to arise, Scheen would provide the Bruins will a capable veteran that could step in at a critical point of the season.
The NHL trade deadline is still 16 days away, but Scheen is a name that could be on the move and the Bruins are more motivated than ever to add to their roster.
