2004 World Series is an ongoing series where we take you back in time and look at moments from that series. We’re reliving the home runs that were hit by the Red Sox during the 2004 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The first homer hit by the Red Sox was by David Ortiz in the top of the first inning.
The 2004 postseason run for the Red Sox changed the lives for Boston sports fans. It can be hard to put into words exactly what that World Series meant to people. The storylines were incredible, David Ortiz cemented himself as an icon forever and the dreaded cruse came to an end.
In the top of the 1st inning of Game 1 of the 2004 World Series, Ortiz added to his postseason legend by crushing a three-run homer.
Ortiz sent Cardinals pitcher Woody Williams 1-0 pitch around the Pesky pole giving the Red Sox a 3-0 lead.
For Ortiz, it was his fifth homer of that postseason and his first career dinger in the World Series. It would also be the first of two big homers for the Red Sox during Game 1.
The 2004 season, Ortiz was an All-Star and won a Silver Slugger Award. In 150 games, the Hall of Fame slugger hit .301 with 175 hits, 94 runs scored, 41 homers, 139 RBIs and a .983 OPS.
Ortiz’s homer wasn’t the only big Red Sox dinger during Game 1, Mark Bellhorn would provide some huge dramatics later in the game.
